Joyce Moreno returns to Rotterdam on 18 November. Back at LantarenVenster. This is one of those shows where you sit down and listen.

Joyce is Rio. Samba, bossa nova, jazz, freedom and a stubborn streak all wrapped into one unmistakable voice. She has been making music for almost sixty years, written more than 400 songs and never cared much for following the obvious route.

That started early. In the late 1960s, Joyce was already writing from her own perspective as a woman, at a time when Brazilian music did not exactly make much room for it. People had opinions. She kept writing.

During Brazil's military dictatorship, she refused to stay quiet. She recorded songs by musicians facing censorship and saw music suppressed by the regime herself. For Joyce, music and freedom have always belonged together. And she is still moving. In 2026, Joyce e Tutty Moreno arrived through Jazz Is Dead, the label and platform founded by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio in Los Angeles, the record sees him producing, playing, arranging and co-writing alongside Joyce. Brazilian music meeting a new generation shaped by jazz, soul and hip-hop.

Then there are the songs. Feminina. Água e Luz. Records that still find their way into jazz clubs, DJ sets and record collections decades later. Gilles Peterson and the UK acid-jazz scene helped introduce her music to a new audience in the 1990s, and every generation since seems to find its own way into Joyce's catalogue.

Joyce herself keeps looking forward. On recent work such as O Mar é Mulher, you hear the same qualities that have always defined her music: warmth, bite, playfulness and a voice entirely her own.

On 18 November, BIRD Rotterdam and LantarenVenster bring Joyce Moreno back to Rotterdam.

A living legend, sure. More importantly, she is still an artist with something to say.
