We were looking forward to welcoming you to BIRD on 09 October for Julia van Reek’s personal story reading. Unfortunately, we have some disappointing news: Julia has fallen ill and will therefore be unable to give the reading.

As a result, we have regrettably had to cancel the event.

We’re incredibly disappointed. We were looking forward to listening to Julia’s personal story and experiences together with you. But her health comes first, of course. We wish Julia a speedy recovery and, above all, hope she can take the time she needs to fully recover. 💜

Who decides what makes a body ‘whole’?

In this candid talk, Julia van Reek shares how she came to the life-changing decision to have her leg amputated. She takes you through her personal journey, the doubts and considerations she faced, and the freedom her decision ultimately brought her.

As a cultural anthropology graduate, Julia connects her own experiences to a broader societal perspective. In her thesis, she explored ableism: the often invisible norms and prejudices surrounding people with disabilities.

A personal, thought-provoking and inspiring story that invites you to look differently at the body, autonomy, and what we actually mean when we describe someone as ‘disabled’.
