A Rising Star in Jazz
In 2020, Wilkins shook the music world with his debut album, Omega, released on Blue Note Records. Backed by his quartet featuring Micah Thomas, Daryl Johns, and Kweku Sumbry, the album received rave reviews from outlets such as The New York Times and NPR, earning the title of best jazz release of 2020. It also garnered a NAACP Image Award nomination and secured Wilkins the prestigious Letter One Rising Stars Award, solidifying his status as a major talent.
In 2022, he released his sophomore album, The 7th Hand, also on Blue Note Records. The album topped numerous year-end lists, including those by Jazzwise, NPR, The Financial Times, and Jazz Times. This success opened doors for his quartet to perform at renowned festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Newport Jazz Festival.
Collaborations and Performances
Beyond leading his quartet, Wilkins has collaborated and performed with both peers and mentors, including Jason Moran, Bob Dylan, Solange, Wynton Marsalis, and Lalah Hathaway, to name a few.
