Binkbeats over The Nest vol. 2!

During The Nest vol. 2, four upcoming talents come together for 5 days to combine their musical strengths, exchange ideas, and create music. On Thursday, 27 October, you can hear their first try-out (in collaboration with North Sea Round Town) followed by a performance during BIRDfest. On one of the days, they were accompanied by Binkbeats, a percussionist/producer from the Netherlands who has made a name for himself in the scene and became known for his Beats Unraveled series.
What brings you here in The Nest?
I was asked here because the players chose me as one of the people they wanted to invite to mentor them. They have already rehearsed for three days and made several songs. Today, I worked with them on those songs. First, they played the songs for me, and we talked about them in general, like how they looked at the songs or the music and instruments, and then we went through them song by song to analyse them.
What was your goal during the mentoring?
What I tried to do is to make certain aspects of the song more visible to them. They are all great musicians, but they were very busy with their own part during the playing. My goal was to be able to look at the whole from a different perspective, see where the focus should be, how we can improve the songs, and what we can do to achieve that.
What do you think of The Nest's initiative?
Oh, this is great, I think there should be many places like this where people can experiment and learn. I think these musicians are almost all graduates so then it is limited to jam sessions afterward, but you can never really talk about music in jam sessions. It's just playing, and you have to learn from practising. And as I said, it's very much from the musician's perspective, while I look at it more from the producer's perspective. So looking at the song as a whole instead of being in the moment and just playing. Which is also fine, but it's just a different way of looking. So anything that gives them more experience outside the school environment, I think is good. So this is a great initiative.
