What would you get if grime and punk had a love child? That’s right: slowthai! The young rapper from Northampton has an anarchist edge, he can’t stand the British royals, and his gigs are the most explosive we’ve seen in a long time.

In a short time, slowthai became one of the most remarkable rising artists of the UK. From Pitchfork to The Guardian: the music press just can’t stop talking about the rapper’s unique sound. This feeling of love isn’t exactly mutual. By slowthai’s own account, he prefers stripping down to his boxer shorts on stage rather than explain his music to a journalist.

And anyway, what’s there to explain: the title of his recently released debut record says it all. Nothing Great About Britain features songs about his passionate aversion to class differences, rightwing politicians and the royal family. slowthai also has a sensitive side. Ladies, for example, is an ode to women, and he expresses nothing but appreciation for his mother on Northampton’s Child. But don’t be misled; there’s no room for sentimentality during his live shows. Let’s just put it like this: if you don’t like mosh pits, make sure to avoid BIRD on 21 October.
