During BoogieBall, Peter Somuah takes you on a musical journey for two nights that effortlessly blends jazz, funk, soul, and West African grooves. As one of the four local hosts, he plays on Friday and Saturday between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM, and with his warm, melancholic trumpet sound, he knows how to get every room moving.
Born and raised in Ghana, Somuah learned to play by endlessly listening to greats like Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Roy Hargrove. His unique style, which fuses jazz and West African rhythms with subtle electronic influences, earned him the Erasmus Jazz Award in 2021, followed by the prestigious Edison Jazz Award in 2022 for his debut album Outer Space. In June 2024, he worked with the WDR Big Band on a project featuring his own compositions, under the direction of renowned arranger Michael Mossman.
Somuah is not only a host during BoogieBall but also the Artist in Focus at North Sea Round Town 2025. His participation in BoogieBall is part of this special residency within the festival, which is affiliated with BoogieBall as a partner.
