BIRDsessions host Thijmen Molema invites Joop de Graaf (bass), Anton de Bruin (keys), and Nuri Bedja (sax) for an evening paying tribute to the legendary jazz-funk group The Headhunters.
The American jazz-fusion band was formed in 1973 by Herbie Hancock. From the instant funk classic "Chameleon" to the rare-groove sound of "God Made Me Funky", The Headhunters have redefined modern funk, world music, and jazz and are among the most innovative groups in music history.
After releasing the groundbreaking album Head Hunters (1973), the first jazz album to go gold, the band toured and recorded for years with the legendary pianist Herbie Hancock. This resulted in the masterpieces Thrust (1974), Flood (1975), and Manchild (1975). In 1976, The Headhunters continued independently, releasing classics like Survival of the Fittest (1976), Straight to the Gate (1978), and Return of the Headhunters (1998).
