Black Cadmium

BIRD takes a peek into the crate of a musical soulmate. This time it's the turn of Rotterdam duo Black Cadmium, who we welcome on the 2nd February with their Detroit-flavoured house sound.

Joginda Macnack and Mike Richards are two Dutch DJs/producers/radio hosts of Surinamese descent, who focus on a wide range of authentic music. Their sound is heavily influenced by the London – Detroit connection; from Hi-Tek to grimy UK sounds. Because vinyl is their weapon of choice, crate digging is a must, which comes in handy for this interview, because they know plenty of records. For two decades they have absorbed the dancefloor and have already shone at events such as the Boiler Room and Lowlands. Now the Rotterdam house/techno/electro duo is coming to BIRD! We ask Black Cadmium about the origins of their love for electronic music and each other, where they draw their inspiration from, and what we can expect from them. Get to know Black Cadmium's favourite tracks! Fan of acid house? All their records can be found in the Spotify playlist!

You are now travelling all over the world for shows. You are both true Rotterdammers. Is there a track that reminds you of Rotterdam?

Phew that's a tough question, but the first track that popped into my head was 'SONO – KEEP CONTROL' (For Those Who Were There ;)).

We have heard that you've known each other for a long time, you were club buddies and in the late nineties, early noughties you went to the infamous Ted Langenbach parties together. Is there a track that reminds you of those club nights?

HALO VARGA – FUTURE!!

How did your love for electronic music originate? Do you remember your first electronic
record
?

My first encounter with electronic music was at my cousin's 18th birthday in 1988. I was 9 or 10 years old then. He was a real Parkzicht guy and played all those tracks from back then at that birthday. Tears still shoot to my eyes when I hear 'L.A. STYLE – JAMES BROWN IS DEAD'. Pfffff what a track. That's where it started for me πŸ™‚

Dj Pierre, one of the pioneers of acid house, has been an important player in your career. Do you have a favourite track of his that has inspired you?

Dj Pierre hasn't made cool music for a long time now (Unfortunately…) but 'YOUR ONLY FRIEND' is the one
d83d

You performed at Lowlands this year! What was your favourite track from this set?

That track embodies everything I love about electronic music. Thick kick, bad ass bass step, sharp snares, wild crashes and rides, trippy strings, 'take me along and we'll see' track 'THE MARTIAN (RED PLANET) – STAR DANCER. That booking came quite quickly in my opinion but, I've always said if we ever get to play in the Bravo, I'll definitely spin that one. And so it happened πŸ™‚

You describe your friendship as a brotherhood. If you had to describe your relationship with a track, which one would it be?

I could name 100 of them, but a track we've both been enjoying a lot lately and which describes our brotherhood in terms of sound is 'MOOD||SWING FT. JOHN CIAFONE – OHH'

In March, you released your debut album, congratulations! What is a track that inspired you while making this album?

For me, there isn't really a specific track, but more the Black Cadmium vibe. Everything goes, no filter. Due to our background as black music lovers and professional ravers πŸ™‚, we love so many music styles. What made it special and fun for me was that we dealt with different artists and therefore also different working methods, from which we drew inspiration. That was especially very enjoyable.

Is there a track we can definitely expect during your set on February 2nd at BIRD?
HUDSON MOHAWKE & NIKKI NAIR – SET THE ROOF

Can you perhaps give me five tracks that define you as a DJ and as a person in this world, at this moment? This is just for Spotify, so you don't need to give an explanation (but you can always do so!).
WES LEE – WEBB
CAJMERE FT DAJAE – BRIGHTER DAYS (MARCO LYS REMIX)
BRANCO FT PRINCESS NOKIA – TAKE OFF
FRITS WENTINK & MALIN GENIE – TEARDROP RENAISSANCE
KARIZMA – TELL ME ABOUT THIS
