Black Soil, LantarenVenster, and BIRD present: Re-score of the Surinamese film classic Faja Lobi, Friday 12 December 12 at LantarenVenster.
BIRD, LantarenVenster, and Black Soil join forces for a special evening where film, music, and conversation intertwine. In celebration of 50 years of Surinamese independence, the poetic documentary Faja Lobi, a classic of Surinamese cinema is brought to life with a live re-score by the pioneering Afro-Dutch collective Fra Fra Sound and Sabrina Starke.
About the evening
The night opens with an in-depth conversation led by music journalist Leendert van der Valk. Fra Fra Sound and Sabrina Starke will share their thoughts on music as a cultural bridge, the inspiration behind their new composition, and the power of collaboration across musical traditions.
The main program follows with the live re-score of Faja Lobi. The film, a lyrical ode to the Surinamese Marowijne River unfolds a rich tapestry of landscapes, traditions, and communities living in harmony. Fra Fra Sound and Sabrina Starke add a new musical dimension to this story, reimagining the original soundtrack by Big Jones with fresh arrangements, soulful vocals, and original compositions.
About the artists
Fra Fra Sound celebrates its 45th anniversary this year and is renowned for blending African and Afro-Surinamese rhythms with jazz and modern grooves. Founded by Vincent Henar, the collective weaves together musical roots from Ghana, Suriname, and the Netherlands into a mesmerizing experience full of rhythm, spirituality, and connection. The name Fra Fra refers to a people from northern Ghana, a tribute to the living musical traditions the group both preserves and renews.
Sabrina Starke, born and raised in Rotterdam, is one of the most distinctive voices in Dutch soul. With her warm, soulful sound and empowering message of awareness and connection, she has become a cornerstone of the Dutch music scene. She has collaborated with the Metropole Orkest and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, and also founded ART=MIND, a mindfulness and empowerment program for creative makers.
An evening where history, music, and identity come together and the rhythms of Suriname flow through the halls of LantarenVenster. This concert offers seated tickets only with open seating.
