15 YEARS OF BIRD
Fifteen years of BIRD. Fifteen years of music, late nights, and connections in the heart of Rotterdam. Over time, BIRD has grown into more than just a venue. It’s a place where music is created, new ideas take shape, and people come together. From live shows to club nights, from food to culture all under one roof.
And in a city with more than 177 nationalities, that feels only natural. Rotterdam is raw, diverse, and constantly moving. BIRD moves with it.
Fifteen years on, BIRD still stands by the same idea it started with: everyone is welcome, and everyone deserves respect.

From day one, one idea has guided BIRD: One Love. Respect for everyone, no matter where you’re from, what you look like, or what music moves you. That spirit comes from the culture BIRD is built on: black music the sound, the stories, and the community around it.
When BIRD first opened its doors, this music had little space within Rotterdam’s cultural landscape. Hiphop, soul, jazz, funk, reggae and club culture were already part of the city’s DNA, but they didn’t have a dedicated home. BIRD helped change that creating a stage for emerging artists, established names, and everything in between.
What followed were fifteen years of unforgettable nights. International legends taking the stage. Local talent performing some of their very first shows. Crowds from every corner of the city and far beyond. Young and old, night owls, music lovers, neighbours, all in the same room.
That has always been BIRD’s strength: the mix. Different styles, different people, one shared energy. Warm, open, and unmistakably Rotterdam.
With its 15th anniversary, BIRD celebrates what it stands for today. Through a current, forward-thinking and adventurous program, we highlight the many sounds and expressions of black music that shape BIRD.
At the same time, we want to spotlight the role BIRD has played over the past fifteen years in supporting and developing young (local) artists, creators and organizations. By actively involving artists, audiences, partners, funds, the municipality and the team behind BIRD, we celebrate and strengthen the community that makes BIRD what it is.
The anniversary is also a moment to look ahead: to welcome new audiences, expand our reach, and introduce more people to the BIRD of today.
