LIVE @BIRD

Live@BIRD was originally started as a stage for jazz, hip-hop, and related genres because the initiators did not feel represented by the cultural institutions in the city. The pursuit of inclusivity and diversity in the Rotterdam cultural offering is embedded in the DNA of our stage. Live@BIRD wants to continue providing a cultural offering that reflects the plurality of the city and its inhabitants, with jazz and hip-hop culture as the main core values.

The music programme of Live@BIRD is a unique combination of originality, quality, topicality, and tradition, with a focus on both local emerging talent and international names. Jazz and hip-hop form the solid foundation, mixed with other contemporary genres such as R&B, grime, soul, funk, afrobeat, and electronic music.

Objectives

Live@BIRD has formulated the following objectives:

  • Offering a current, innovative, and adventurous music programme in a club setting within the frameworks of the artistic profile.
  • Making a proactive contribution to the development of young (local) talents and thereby promoting a vital music scene in our city.
  • Ensuring accessibility for a wide audience, with special attention to 'culture-avoiding' target groups.
  • Collaborating within and outside the city to achieve the objectives mentioned above and to increase our impact.

It is important to emphasise that the target groups in the third objective (regarding ensuring broad accessibility) in our view are not 'culture-averse'. These are target groups who do not yet feel at home in the current offerings in our city. For this reason, their participation in cultural activities is not yet customary. Live@BIRD wants to change this.
