Eigenlijk kunnen woorden niet beschrijven hoe awesome Natalie Prass is, maar deze mensen hebben dat toch geprobeerd. Check wat er over haar geschreven is in de pers en kom vooral naar haar concert op 17 juni in BIRD!

1. Rolling Stone

Prass’ concise, self-titled set is full of lush orchestrations, mellow brass and an apiary of sparkly, fluttering, close-miked vocals that echo Laura Nyro and early Kate Bush.

Think Harry Nilsson meets Dionne Warwick with more than a little Dolly Parton in the mix.

3. The New York Times

The production creates a richly retro, slightly cluttered ambience, like a parlor full of inherited knickknacks. It also points the songs toward vintage archetypes of long-suffering women and the men who break their hearts. In song after song, she’s needy, uncertain, wary and still tempted although she knows better.

4. The New Yorker

There’s something magical, gossamer about her sound. It’s an airiness that grew out of Nashville and has since flown away from it, enticing us to follow.

5. The Guardian

The touchstones here, such as Dusty in Memphis, are all records that revel in a particular kind of musicality, yet this is a record that never feels retro, just timeless.

6. Pitchfork

Prass sounds positively uplifted as the band swells over her lovesick harmonies, forgoing any tortured abnegation. There’s idealism in her voice that’s tempered by heartbreak without falling prey to cynicism—like the bitterness has been skimmed off the top, leaving an evergreen sweetness.

Halverwege de korte set hangt ze in haar KISS-shirt aan het lage plafond van de schuur waar ze vanavond speelt. Niet dat haar muziek rock ’n roll is, helemaal niet zelfs. Haar titelloze debuutalbum viel al op door de luchtige sfeer in zowel de arrangementen (met blazers!) als in haar delivery, die ergens tussen soul en folk in hangt. De blazers zijn er live helaas niet bij, maar songs als ‘Bird of Prey’ en de suikerzoete ballad ‘It Is You’ worden enorm soepel en overtuigend gebracht.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the tender voice and—sorry, reality is tough—heartbreaking lyrics of Natalie Prass.’

9. Written in Music

Dat Prass een fijne, warme stem heeft en geweldige songs schrijft wordt al met albumopener ‘My Baby Don’t Understand Me’ gelijk duidelijk. […] Wat een heerlijke weelderig arrangement en wat een geweldige opbouw krijgt de song mee. Het vrolijke en wederom rijk gearrangeerde ‘Bird Of Prey’ sluit daar naadloos op aan. De soul van het daarop volgende ‘Your Fool’ weer net zo goed. Het door prachtige strijkers gedreven ‘Christy’ is al net zo’n weldaad. Zonder twijfel een van de mooiste songs die je dit jaar gaat horen. En dan hebben we alleen het eerste gedeelte van het album nog maar gehad.

10. Kicking The Habit

Prachtig gearrangeerd met ruimtelijke strijkers, soulvolle blazers en subtiele piano brengt Prass je emotionele soulpop met eveneens folkinvloeden. […] Verplicht luistervoer dus.

11. Consequence Of Sound

This is music inspired by what you remember hearing as a kid from your parents’ and grandparents’ record collections, but it’s been made fresh and totally original again.

Hoe vaak hoor je nog jonge zangeressen die Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell en Diana Ross vakkundig in herinnering roepen? Juist, zelden. De uit Nashville afkomstige Natalie Prass doet het gewoon even.
