Trumpet player (and composer and producer) Christian Scott, aka jazz’s young style god, aka the wunderkind from New Orleans, needs no introduction. As standard-bearer of Stretch Music, he shows us the future of jazz: stretched out, with plenty of room for other musical forms, languages and cultures. And now, in 2019, he’s returning to his roots with Ancestral Recall. Find out how that sounds in LantarenVenster on 10 November!

Jazz’s Young Style God

Christian Scott started his musical education under the guidance of his uncle, saxophone player Donald Harrison, when he was only 13 years old. After graduating from the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts he received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Once he finished college, he immediately joined artists including McCoy Tyner, Prince, Marcus Miller, Thom Yorke, Mos Def and Solange on stage.

Stretched out jazz

Christian’s Stretch Music does exactly what it says on the tin: it stretches the traditional interpretations of jazz to create more room for other musical forms, languages and cultures. This new genre, of which Christian is one of the standard-bearers, might have its roots in jazz, but other than that it’s blind to genres. The themes in his music are current and often have political overtones: from institutional racism to same-sex marriage to hurricane Katrina. Live, he yells and whispers through his trumpet, prompts you to dance and think and shows you the future of jazz.
