She’s too edgy for a big break in the States – in her own words she’s an outlaw with her genre, a mix of blues, jazz, folk, chanson and her blunt opinions – but here in the Netherlands we know how to appreciate the music of singer-songwriter Dayna Kurtz. Ever since her hit ‘Love Gets In The Way’ of 2003, she’s had a group of loyal fans who appreciate that she tells it as it is.

Even though Kurtz isn’t as big in the US as in Europe, she’s performed with Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, BB King, Norah Jones and others stateside. She’s actually very close with Norah Jones, and she’s recorded multiple tracks with her. Besides her own compositions, Kurtz also plays classics, but with jazz, folk, pop and blues layers.

On stage she goes all-out with her warm, intense voice and powerful guitar. This already resulted in a number of magical concerts, including her Dutch tour in 2016. Kurtz is well disposed to the Netherlands in any case: “I will always love you best for giving a shit about my music first and making excellent coffee besides.” It’s not surprising she used recordings from her Dutch tour for the live albums Here Vol. 1 and Here Vol. 2 (which features a few classic tearjerkers). On Wednesday 30 January she’ll enchant BIRD, and maybe even make us shed a few tears!
